Do you have fruit trees that just aren't as productive as they used to be? Or ornamental trees that have got a bit unruly? Or any tree that is looking weak and unhealthy? We can help!

Unpruned trees not only look untidy but can be more susceptible to pests and diseases. Overlapping, damaged or rubbing branches can cause wounds in the bark or prevent airflow through the canopy, both of which make a tree vulnerable to attack. They may carry more foliage than necessary, making them a greater risk in high winds. Lack of pruning in fruit and nut trees mean the branches are left to grow at will, so the tree puts less energy into growing its fruits.

Pruning, and tree care in general, is best approached with at least some knowledge and understanding, not just of the seasonal cycle of tree growth but of the particular species too. For example, some apple trees will grow their fruit on spurs that have grown in the same year, but others will grow fruit on last year’s branches. Knowing which is which can be the difference between having a crop of apples or not!

If you have a tree that has been uncared for over some time, it will probably take a couple of seasons of careful management to restore it to its best; from then on, it should just be a case of regular maintenance tasks. As with all our garden maintenance, we can advise you what needs to be done and also work out a plan that takes into account the time and expertise you have too.

Tasks that we might suggest for your tree include:

  • One-off prune to restore shape and tackle any damaged or dangerous branches.
  • Regular prunes, for shape or to promote fruiting, usually once or twice per year depending on the tree/species.
  • Autumn treatments to prevent winter moth and other pests (we have chemical-free options).
  • Aeration of compacted soil around the base to promote drainage and root health (making the tree less vulnerable in high winds).
  • Harvesting – if you have fruit that you just can’t reach yourself!

Why not get in touch to arrange a no obligation chat with one of our team? We will be pleased to visit your home at a time that suits you to discuss what we can do to help. We can also build tree care into a wider garden maintenance plan so mention any other areas you’d like support with too.

My thanks to Adam for his meticulous attention to detail and his helpful advice, always good to see him.
Nice to meet Tom. A very polite young man who is obviously enjoying his studdies at Sparsholt College and his apprenticeship with you.
I look forward to seeing Adam in order to prune my climbing rose.

I would like to say how delighted we are with the work carried out. Mel, Paul and Tony all worked very hard, they totally took on board the specific need relating to safety as well as the general garden issues. Paul and Tony were excellent at consulting and discussing with me what I felt best in terms of the brief and adjusting if and as necessary, constantly pleasant and polite to deal with. Mel had picked up on particular issues from the first consultation and offered valuable advice. The outcome means a great deal less worry for me going forward.
Altogether a very positive experience and outcome which I would not hesitate to recommend to others.

Dom and Adam's work (garden maintenance) is greatly appreciated. Dom really listened to everything we discussed very carefully and went out of his way to understand and then act upon that discussion. We are extremely pleased with the work done - both to the pond and pyracantha.

We wanted to write and say how pleased we are with our low maintenance garden makeover. We are very impressed with the attitude of your staff who were prepared to listen to our requirements. Your team John and Rick brushed up and left everything tidy at the end of the day. We now have a garden we can manage and it looks great. THANK YOU HAMBROOKS.

I wish to express my gratitude to Sam Mercer and the team for the design and renovation of my garden. I am thrilled with the finished look. Sam was meticulous with the detailing especially as I went for materials I had only seen in photos or on various websites. Sam sourced for me and now I have a really gorgeous garden that I am looking forward to enjoying in the summer months. The team did a fantastic job, in adverse weather conditions, especially in keeping a shared path clean after every day which was a specific requirement for me. Nothing was too much trouble. Hambrooks are not the cheapest but you get what you pay for, I would highly recommend anyone thinking of renovating their garden to use Hambrooks.

Mr & Mrs Ward. Hamble, Southampton Jan 2020

Hambrooks has transformed our garden from an outdated, slightly cramped area, into a contemporary, crisp, easily maintained and usuable space. It looks more spacious thanks to the vision and foresight of Hambrooks & Matthew, who turned an idea from my wife, drawn on an A4 sheet of paper into reality. Weare pleased to say it is still ‘wildlife friendly’ to which the many Squirrels, Hedgehogs, and many & varied species of birds can testify. We have no hesitation in recommending Hambrooks, Matthew & his team to all.

Dear Craig, Just wanted to say thank you for your part in creating a beautiful garden for us at the front and back of the house. Also please pass on our thanks to Mike for his advice and to the 2 teams headed by Mark and Terry. We were impressed with how hard all the men worked in all weathers, their attention to detail and how smooth the whole process was for us. Everyone was polite and always helpful in discussing our ideas and answering our queries. We would have no hesitation in recommending Hambrooks to our friends as the company delivers on what they advertise to do just as they did in 1993 when we first used them to landscape our garden.

Mr & Mrs Shrives, Lee-on-Solent Nov 2019

We just wanted to write and thank you for sending the two Toms to help us this morning. They really were so polite and courteous explaining exactly what they were going to do and confirming that we were happy. A real joy to have in the garden! Do pass our thanks onto them. As Mike said, Hambrook's always have such delightful and knowledgable staff. And the tree looks a beautiful shape and I am no longer worried about the fig bringing the conservatory down in the wind!
